Summer Heat

Ah the first official day of my holidays, and I only went into work twice. We have an automatic system that calls me on my mobile phone when certain processes fail. By 9.00am it had called me several times and was annoying me to no end. So I decided a trip to work to redirect calls to other staff was in order. Then later I had to go back in for a teleconference. Its just easier to go into work to get this stuff done.

I have a friend Murph who lives in Boston USA. We exchange calendars each year. Its much more interesting having a calendar with pictures of a place that isn’t your local town, or your country, on the wall. A few minor drawbacks are that the national holidays are wrong, the moon phases are wrong, and other items such as local telephone numbers just aren’t right. But its still fun.

This year Murph included a few extras in the parcel including some samples of cologne. I’m not sure if somewhere in the postal service a drug sniffer dog didn’t like this or it was just random chance but the parcel had been opened and resealed. A big green sticker on the parcel indicating it had been opened for a customs inspection. It obviously passed as it made it this far.

I decided today that I should put some sort of insulation into my roof to try and reduce the temperature in my house in the summer months. So today I bought 9 packs of Pink Batts. Enough to cover the entire roof. That was the easy part. Now I just have to work out how to install the things. And thats not easy. Climbing around in my un-insulated roof in summer is not very much fun. 🙁 I think I might have to do it at night.

I went to dinner with Jo, Brett and his Mum and partner last night at Finnigins. My steak was very nice as was the conversation. Afterwards we walked to Cold Rock ice-creamery so they could try one of the many flavours of ice-cream they have. After that we went home and Jo took an early night and Brett and I watched Matrix 2 on DVD. Had to fast forward a few parts, definitely not as good as the first movie in my opinion.

My friend Gaylene invited me (and a group of others) over to play Taboo at her place tonight. The game is basically a deck of cards. On each card is a word that is Taboo and not allowed to be said. There are other related words on the card that are not allowed to be said. When its your turn you have to make your team members guess the Taboo word. For example your Taboo word might be slug and the words you’re not allowed to use could be snail, pest, garden, plants. It was a fun night. It makes you try and think “outside the box” as you use other words to describe your Taboo word. A good game if you have a mind like a thesaurus.

Last year the local RSPCA animal refuge put out the word they were looking for donations of animal food. Mum and I bought some pet food and took it out there. Since then Mum has been buying a tin of pet food each week and has accumulated a medium box full. I picked up some dog food during the week so it was time for another trip. I had read the usual Christmas stories about how the animal refuge gets heaps of unwanted pets over the Christmas season. So when we went out I expected hundreds (well, dozens) of animals looking for homes. So I was a little dissappointed with the 3 cats and 6 dogs. The puppies were from big breeds and weren’t very cute, but still fun to play with 🙂

Before we went to the animal refuge I had to change over my car registration sticker. It actually expired about a week ago but I put the new sticker in my glovebox and didn’t get around to changing it, until now. Pretty silly as you can be fined for having an older sticker on your window. So now that a new month has rolled around it was pretty obvious that my sticker was out of date (each year is a different colour). So I got the old one off and put on the new one. If you didn’t know the secret is to thoroughly wet the old sticker before you remove it. It must weaken the glue and makes it come off much easier.

I had to go into work this afternoon for an hour or so. My boss was actually in the office. She is still on holidays until next Tuesday and I’ve already started my holidays. And yet we were both in the office. Sheesh.
Anyway I got what needed to be done pretty quickly and got out of there.

This afternoon I went over to Brett’s house (the local one he is renovating so he can sell it) to see how the work was going. Brett and Jo were busy painting. I helped Bretts Mum polish door knobs for a while. Very exciting stuff (not!).

House of visitors

Damien came over tonight for a while. Then Brett and Jo arrived after a day working on their house renovations. It was good to have visitors as I was feeling a bit down. I put the radio on and we talked and ate chocolates and talked and ate pringles and talked. Probably around 11pm we decided it was getting late and Damien went home and Brett and Jo got ready for bed (they are staying at my place this weekend).
