We were picked from our hotel lobby in the morning for our half day temple tour. Our first stop was at the temple that housed the golden Buddha. The temple was built to celebrate the birthday of the current King of Thailand. The story we were told is that a very big Buddha statue was made of concrete and it was decided to be moved. But during the moving process a crane broke and the statue was dropped cracking the concrete. It was only then that they discovered that the statue, underneath the concrete, was made of gold. Ages past the gold had been covered in concrete to stop invaders from taking the treasure. But the knowledge that it was gold underneath was lost.
The second stop was to see the giant reclining Buddha. And this statue was giant.
On a lot of the statues people attach gold leaf as tribute
In this temple was information regarding the origin of Thai massage. There used to be lots of statues in the position on massage but over the years they have been damaged so only about 20 remain. This was my favourite.
Last stop on the tour was a temple that had a lot of Buddha statues in all the different poses. This was my favourite because he has a little belly. Like me 🙂
