Narration

I’ve noticed a lot of movies lately make use of narration in the story. And I can’t help but remember a line from the movie Adaptation where at a writing seminar the character Mckee says:

Robert McKee: …and God help you if you use voice-over in your work, my friends. God help you. That’s flaccid, sloppy writing. Any idiot can write a voice-over narration to explain the thoughts of a character.

And I have to say in the movies I’ve seen it used in lately, I agree. Ironically the movie Adaptation makes strong use of narration itself. And yet it works. A great movie.

Happy Thoughts

Captain James T Kirk said in Star Trek V; “Damn it, Bones, you’re a doctor. You know that pain and guilt can’t be taken away with a wave of a magic wand. They’re the things we carry with us, the things that make us who we are. If we lose them, we lose ourselves. I don’t want my pain taken away! I need my pain!”

I think people are too weak in standing by their own decisions. If someone wrongs you, you’re disappointed, angry, pissed off. Time doesn’t change that. If someone betrays or hurts you time doesn’t change that. Only actions, events, things, can change that. I say that if you made the decision that someone deserves to be hated, despised, at some point. Don’t forget. Don’t let them think that in a few days, weeks, months or years, that things have changed. The event still happened. They still wronged you. Fuck them I say. There are over 6.5 billion people on this planet and we’re only here for a limited time. Leave the sons of bitches to go their own merry way (hopefully driving straight into a tree a long way away from you) and spend time with those who value your company and bring joy into your life.

And I’m not talking about people who steal your parking spot. Or those morons who pay for movie tickets with a credit card in the line in front of you. I’m talking about those you really hate. Those who if they stepped out into the street in front of your moving car you’d really have to consider whether to swerve or keep on driving. And if you did decide to swerve, it would be because you didn’t want to have to wash your car afterwards. I have a list of three people whom are on my ‘list’. I think three over thirty years is not a bad size.

Although if Neko pees on my chair again she may end up being the 4th…

Rumor Has It

Went to the movies last night and saw Rumor Has It starring Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Costner and Shirley Maclaine. Jennifer flys home for her little sisters wedding with her fiance. While there she discovers that her grandmother and mother both slept with the same man, Costner, and was the inspiration for the book The Graduate. She may also be the daughter of Costner from her mothers fling. So she goes of in search of Costner and her families history. The story is very light and you don’t get attached to the characters at all. I did enjoy the movie so if you’re looking for a simple movie to pass some time go check it out.

Loved this quote from Costner in the movie; ‘Life should be a little nuts. Otherwise, it’s just a bunch of… Thursdays, strung together.’

Loser Quote

‘I may actually turn out to be one of those lucky people?’
‘What lucky people?’
‘Well, you know how there are couples who stay together just because they feel like they can’t do any better. Or there are people sad and miserable and live alone. But then there’s this microscopic little tiny group of lucky people who get to be with the person they are madly in love with.’
‘Dora, have you ever considered being in love and leaving off the madly part?’
